Decorating Bathrooms for Christmas

Christmas is a time when we get to transform our living space for a couple of months into a festive ornamented home.  Ribbons, ornaments, lights, and figurines all come out during this wonderful season.  Scents of cinnamon and cookies mingle with pine and fir to fill our homes with holiday aromas.  Some rooms in our home may become transformed by the additions of bright colors or whimsical decorations.

One room that we don’t want to forget in our holiday decorations is the bathroom.  Bathrooms can be fun to decorate for Christmas because it doesn’t take a lot to go a long way in a small space.  Also bathrooms are generally a contained area so it is easy to change the entire room’s look with a few changes.

Start with the textiles.  Towels, shower curtains and rugs can all be changed for the holiday season.  Changing your rug to a plush cranberry or deep evergreen is a good place to start.  Add matching or coordinating towels.  If you choose a red rug, you may wish to use a complimentary green for your towels or go with a winter white.  Placing a dark colored rug on the floor will give your bathroom a more grounded feel. If you are using a brilliant color you should feel free to let the rug be as plush and as richly colored as the season suggests.

A darkly painted bathroom can be perked up with lighter textiles.  A lightly colored rug, cream, gold, silver or even tan can give you a foundation for the rest of your decorations. Changing the towels and rugs can make a big difference in the appearance of your bathroom.  Decorative towels can be tied with ribbon or raffia to give a more decorative appearance.  Small ornaments can be hung from the ribbon or raffia.   A wreath can be hung on the inside or outside of the bathroom to add to the holiday mood.

Bathrooms are an easy place to try out decorating themes that are different from the rest of your house.  If you want to use different decorating colors but they don’t coordinate with the rest of your home’s decorations, try them in the bathroom.  If your entire house is decorated in traditional colors but your wish to use pastel blue and silver you can easy carry those colors into your bathroom.  If you have decorations that would highlight your bathroom countertops, let them stand side by side with your toiletries.  Change the towels and shower curtain and look for an oval rug that has silver threads woven into it.

If you wish to have a room that is party themed with jewel tones, fill a basket with bright ball ornaments and place it on your bathroom countertop then hang different colored towels, find a brilliant colored flokati rug and perhaps a holiday print to put on the wall.  A brightly hued wreath will help pull this look together.

Whether you choose to coordinate it with the rest of your decorations or if you choose to make it completely different, decorating your bathrooms will help enhance the rest of the house.

Japanese Decor For Your Home

Have you ever been fascinated by the feel of the Japanese decor? If you have ever went on a journey to Japan, you know that this look is very popular over there and it make a big impression too. There is a way that you can get the Japanese decor in your home with minimal effort. In fact, you probably don’t need to spend a lot of money at all.

The Japanese home decor feel is about finding balance, space, and the simple decor. There is nothing extravagant about the furniture or the appliances that go into a home this is not the way that they want to look to be like. Now, don’t go cleaning out your home and throwing away the appliances and decorations you already have. Just save them for another room in the home instead.

Start with the basics in furniture. The first thing to consider is the kotastsu. This is a large table that sits very low to the floor and it has a small heater placed underneath. This is a place that everyone meets in the home to eat and to talk as well as being the focal point in the room.

Don’t fill the room with furniture that you cannot use; you want enough furniture to sit in but you do not want to take up a lot of space and create the cluttered look.

It’s normal for a Japanese home to have a Tatami, or mat that you place on the floor. You can have one large Tatami or you can have several of them in one room. If you don’t have a Tatami or you can purchase several bamboo area rugs. Bamboo rugs are the perfect addition to this look if you don’t have access to a Japanese rug. Bamboo blinds are also used as part of the decor. These bamboo blinds were also called sudare and they would actually provide a petition between rooms so you could not see through them.

One of the most versatile beds was invented in Japan. The futon was a part of the complete decor. It not only saved on space but it was a bed when someone needed a place to sleep and a sofa when someone needed to sit. The futon was originally on a wooden frame but today there are metal frames to choose from too. The mattress on the original futon was much thicker than the ones we see today. There was not frame to the bed either.

One of the most popular looks in Japanese decor is the Shoji screens. These screens were decorated with special art prints on them. They were used to divide a section of the room. A Noren was a curtain used to make a separation between two rooms. These curtains were made from cotton and they have screen images on them to highlight and accent the decor.

Using Japanese decor in your home will help you to relax and unwind after a hard day. If you don’t want to do your entire home in it, simply do one or two rooms; bedroom and living room.

Avoiding Home Decorating Disasters

When your home decor is perfect, you create a beautiful haven that makes you want to rush home to relax and rejuvenate. When your home surroundings are at odds with your personality, however, it can create a virtual disaster, making you want to run away. There are a few items to consider when planning how to decorate your home.

When decorating your home, you may be used to one particular way to do things but maybe it is time to change that way so you can create a different look that you never thought about before.

Someone Else Chooses the Style

If you love the sophisticated style of Victorian furniture, but someone else chooses a more modern look, you will not be happy. If your favorite color is blue and the other person paints your walls orange, you will never be able to relax. The style in which you decorate your home is a very personal decision, and should reflect your unique taste and identity. If someone wants to help with the decor, allow them to accessorize or accent your main look. There is balance even when more than one person is decorating.

Using the Wrong Color

Colors can either make or break a design scheme. You should choose your colors very carefully. For example, even if your favorite color is red, you may not want to paint an entire room with it. This is especially true in a small room. Red has a tendency to make people’s emotions run high, making it very hard for the mind to slow down and relax. Instead, it would be better to use bright colors such as red sparingly as accents.

Not paying attention to the floor

One of the most common mistakes in home decorating is to ignore the floor. You walk on it all the time but most people don’t realize the significance of the floor. Use hardwood whenever possible. You can create a new look by changing area rugs in a room. Brighten the room with bright colors like yellow rugs or you can tone it down with a blue rug instead.

Not Considering the Purpose of the Room

When deciding how to arrange a room, functionality is just as important as its aesthetic characteristics. For example, a living room is meant to entertain and converse with guests. If you do not have the furniture set up in a matter conducive to these purposes, it will not be comfortable for you or your visitors.

If you are not sure what you want to do with a room, consider asking for help or allowing the other person in your home to decorate it anyway they want to. You may also want to consider searching online to find the right look for your home. Remember, just because you are using the room for one purpose now doesn’t mean it has to stay that way forever. Mix it up a little. Turn your den into an entertainment room or even another bedroom if you need it.

Decorating your home should take a lot of thought and consideration. With careful planning and following a few tips on what not to do, you will be able to avoid situations and create the environment, which will complement your style and spirit. Don’t keep your style and spirit hidden; show off your unique decorating style.
